The Wade House Bowl
A hand-turned walnut bowl by a Wisconsin woodturner we met at a craft fair, full bark rim left intact around the entire opening. The walnut came from a tree that fell on the Wade House property in Greenbush. There is exactly one of these.
We met him at a craft fair on the Wade House grounds, at a table with more personality than the soap stand next to it. The wood he turns comes from trees that fall on that same property, which meant the bowl on his table and the ground under our feet had, until recently, been the same tree.
He leaves the bark on. Most turners clean the rim down to smooth wood because bark is unpredictable and prone to falling off in shipping, which is a reasonable thing to be afraid of and not a thing he appears to worry about. The result looks less like tableware and more like a cross-section of the actual tree, which is exactly what it is.
There is one of these. When it sells, the listing retires, the way one-offs do here.
