The Case for a $429 Coffee Table

The Case for a $429 Coffee Table

An $80 table and a $429 table can look similar in a thumbnail. They do not look similar in a living room, and they especially do not look similar in five years.

The $80 table is made to a price. Someone, somewhere, was told to hit a number, and every decision after that was in service of the number: thinner material, a finish that looks fine in a product photo and mediocre in daylight, joinery that assumes you will replace the whole thing before it matters.

The $429 table is made from a single piece of root or stump, which means the manufacturing cost floor is already higher before anyone talks about finish or joinery. It also means no two are the same, which sounds like a shipping headache and is actually the entire point. You are not buying a table. You are buying the one table.
